Your Opportunity

We are currently seeking a professional engineer with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in civil engineering, municipal engineering, land development or related experience to support our team in the delivery of airport infrastructure projects at various locations across Canada and internationally to join the Aviation Practice in our Ottawa office. Our Aviation Civil Engineering Team is looking for a self-motivated team member to work within our team. Your Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on Canadian and International airport projects across the world.

  • Work with Professional Engineers and Project Managers in the design and project management of airfield infrastructure projects for private airport, regional and international airports by applying principles of civil engineering. Specific tasks include design of new runways, taxiways, aprons, airside service roads, airside commercial developments including associated site servicing, grading, earthworks and stormwater management.

  • Organize and conduct engineering investigations and planning work which have a well-defined scope. Outline and prepare relatively straightforward reports of sections of more complex reports, working under the periodic review of a more experienced professional.

  • Provide engineering services during construction activities by reviewing shop drawings for conformance with specifications; prepares records and progress reports defining construction progress; construction observation and evaluates the results from quality control testing.

  • Assist in the development and preparation of figures, design drawings, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, technical reports, etc.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current Transport Canada, ICAO, FAA and related standards and recommended practices. Design and develop plans and drawings using Civil 3D and AviPlan.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of reviewing agencies such as NAV CANADA, Transport Canada, Municipalities, etc.

  • Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, and regulatory agency specifications.

  • Contribute to the development of specifications and Plan of Construction Operations (PCO’s) and write miscellaneous reports.

  • Coordinate with other disciplines as required.

  • Perform field inspections of construction where appropriate. Travelling is expected as a minimum to potentially remote locations in Canada for a moderate period of time on a regular basis during the summer months.

  • Support project management and proposal writing.

  • Perform such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

  • Mentor junior staff.


Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Working knowledge of computer programs and web-based applications including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), AutoCAD , Civil3D, AviPlan Aircraft Modelling software.

  • Specific secret clearance on federal Canada projects is an asset.

  • Strong technical background

  • Demonstrated problem solving ability involving analysis of problems and possible solutions, planning of corrective action, including cost estimates and review of alternates, creative thinking where new design is required

  • Effective team player with excellent interpersonal skills with team members and clients

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to travel to project sites (some remote) for design purposes and resident construction services.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors’ degree in Civil Engineering

  • Licensed Professional Engineering with a minimum of 5 years related work experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in civil engineering design, or project engineering/management in the transportation / municipal / land development industry.

  • Specific experience in Airport and/or Municipal design projects is an asset.

Position will primarily work in an office setting; may require some field work.
