Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an individual to oversee the implementation of Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) program for our Environmental Services Division within the United States. The position can be based out of one of our larger offices in the country. Under the direction of the HSSE Director, US Operations, this position will coordinate the day-to-day operations of the HSSE program for our Environmental Services Business Line.

This is a full-time position, consisting of 40 hours per work week.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Environmental Services Business line and operational staff with matters that relate to Health, Safety, Security, and Environment.

  • Provide support on the continuous development and improvement of HSSE training and implementation of Stantec’s Health and Safety Management system. - Provide coaching, advice, and direction to leadership on HSSE as it pertains to the variety of services provided by the business line for all regions across the US and global operations as required.

  • Assist in providing world class consulting services to Stantec clients integrating Stantec’s HSSE management system with client systems where needed.

  • Conduct regular scheduled meetings with discipline leads and HSSE resources across the US to ensure effective communication of current information, programs, trends and other HSSE related matters.

  • Assist ES leadership and project teams in the development of Project RFP’s, Project specific safety plans and integration of client or regionally specific HSSE requirements.

  • Conduct and/or assist with incident investigations as per Stantec’s incident investigation processes including the completion of the incident causation analysis and effective implementation of corrective actions.

  • Work with the HSSE team and business line leadership to develop and implement policies, procedures, across the organization and specific to the ES business line.

  • Assist Leadership and office management across the US with ISO, Federal, Regional and Client Audits.

  • Liaise with the Local Marketing department to promote HSSE initiatives within the ES business line. - Act as the Indigenous Relations HSSE Advisor for sub-contractor prequalification and support the RFP process for Stantec’s aboriginal partnerships.

Key Functions

Advise ES and Office HSSE staff and Business line management on current HSSE industry trends, Client specific program requirements, regulatory requirements, Stantec HSSEMS processes and tools.

  • Engage in HSSE communication activities through the use of newsletters, bulletins, reports and StanNet (Stantec’s intranet) and the local ES SharePoint site.

  • Manage the ES business line annual HSSE KPI’s. Work with Business line leadership to meet Stantec annual targets and assess trends. Where applicable work with leadership to implement corrective action plans to drive continuous improvement.

  • Provide support for Stantec’s contractor management program and conduct contractor prequalification assessments as per Stantec’s procedures when requested.

  • Oversee the Business line HSSE performance including statistical assessment of leading and lagging indicators. Develop and implement action plans based on trends within Stantec and / or the business line as required.

  • Work with ES leadership to ensure ongoing inspections of offices, labs, warehouse facilities and projects are completed as required.

  • Assist Regional and Business line management on the purchase of PPE and provide advice on the appropriate PPE for tasks conducted.

  • Assist project teams in the development of project specific safety plans and emergency response plans. - Coordinate the incident communication process through the business line leadership. This may include responding to incident notifications, conducting investigations as part of a team, reviewing incident reports and reporting to leadership and clients.

  • Ensure the timely completion, documentation and filing of HSSE documents as required. - If required, liaise with the Workers’ Compensation Claims Coordinator during injury follow-up discussions and the implementation of Stantec’s ‘Early and Safe Return to Work’ program at a local level.

  • Assist with audits and action plans within the region related to ISO and OHSAS - Organize events to promote Health and Safety, this may include NAOSH week, Steps for Life, etc.

  • Manage the local SharePoint site to ensure information is up to date. -

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • CSP or CIH designation is required.

  • Extensive experience in HSSE and environmental remediation, environmental management, geotechnical, biophysical and archaeological projects is required.

  • Maintain required field HSSE courses to work in the oil and gas, power, and mining sectors.

  • Working knowledge of HSSE regulations for across the United States.

  • Strong leadership skills and the capability to assess priorities and to work independently.

  • Well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal, organizational abilities.

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Capable of delivering, preparing, and presenting to small and large groups. - Strong business development skills and understanding as it relates to HSSE.

  • A willingness to work in a team atmosphere or with a minimal amount of supervision.

  • Demonstrate proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.

Education and Experience

A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a health and safety profession in a senior level role.

Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field from recognized university.
