Your Opportunity

Stantec’s International Development team in Washington, D.C. is looking for a highly-motivated, team-oriented, internationally-experienced Principal Engineer with strong technical experience in water, energy, transportation or environmental engineering, and a solid understanding of sustainability/sustainable infrastructure to take on a key technical leadership role within the team. Reporting directly to the Vice President for International Development and working closely with operations, business development, project management and technical staff, this is a unique opportunity to oversee and manage select engineering projects and competitive government contracts with multiple U.S. foreign assistance agency clients (USAID, MCC, DFC, etc.), contribute substantively to major pursuits, provide relevant thought leadership, and help grow and develop staff.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical delivery on select projects ensuring successful outcomes for our clients and beneficiaries. This includes providing overall technical expertise, administrative direction and supporting the experts carrying out technical requirements on multiple competitive global and country-specific contracts.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact in a home office management role for various US foreign assistance agency contracts maintaining responsibility for both the technical and management-related requirements of these mechanisms, such as procurement, personnel, reporting, and financial administration

  • Support the proposal process as a technical lead and/or contributing and reviewing content as needed

  • Lead, challenge, and inspire technical staff (including coaching/mentoring young professionals) through substantive engagement and communication

  • Encourage forward thinking and help boost industry presence by lending expertise, insight, and perspective to thought leadership activities


Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong technical background working as an infrastructure engineer in design, construction, and/or oversight roles on water and sanitation, energy, transportation, or environmental infrastructure projects

  • Demonstrated experience working in progressively responsible management roles on large-scale, complex foreign assistance projects in developing countries, ideally those funded by or affiliated with U.S. or international bilateral donor agencies (MCC, USAID, DFID, etc.) and/or other international financing institutions (World Bank, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, United Nations, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, etc.). Familiarity with FIDIC and/or other relevant international engineering design/construction standards preferred.

  • Team player with experience building, leading, and managing a team of project managers and support staff

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with an ability to clearly convey and distill complex technical information to a variety of audiences

  • Fluency in English required; fluency in another language, such as French, Arabic, and/or Portuguese is a plus

  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally periodically for short-duration assignments (typically one to two weeks)

  • Ability to drive on behalf of the company

  • Travel up to 25%

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a civil engineering field required, master’s degree in either an engineering, environmental services, or business-related field highly preferred

  • Minimum 20 years’ experience working on infrastructure projects or programs required, ideally those funded by or affiliated with U.S. or international bilateral donor agencies (MCC, USAID, DFID, etc.) and/or other international financing institutions (World Bank, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, United Nations, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience living/working abroad in developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, or Asia is highly desired

  • Professional Engineering licensure (US) or Chartered Engineer (UK) is highly preferred
