Over the past few years, the Infrastructure Sector has grown substantially with incredible opportunity for continued growth. With the changes in the Canadian market through the energy transition, the infrastructure sector will continue to be a major source of opportunity and diversification for Environmental Services (ES). We believe that with decades of experience, Stantec offers a wealth of technical knowledge and a strong understanding of federal, provincial, and local regulations, and is well positioned for continued strong growth in this sector. From planning and design to construction and maintenance, Stantec’ offers a one-stop shop to bring infrastructure projects from concept to completion.

We are seeking a senior business leader to serve as our Infrastructure Sector Leader for ES in Canada. Stantec’s Canadian ES Infrastructure Sector is made up of the Community Development, Water, and Transportation Sectors. Our ideal candidate will have pre-existing client relationships and a proven track record of winning work within these market spaces. The successful candidate will embody Stantec’s philosophy that “we are better together” and will demonstrate a keen ability to organize information, communicate clearly, manage expectations, and provide a framework for driving revenue growth. This individual will establish the strategic direction for Stantec’s Canadian ES Infrastructure Sector program in collaboration with our Community Development, Water, and Transportation planning, engineering and design teams, as well as other members within the ES business line.

Your Key Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Grow the Environmental Service Infrastructure Sector business in Canada

  • Be responsible for annual preparation of the Infrastructure Sector Plan, which is comprised of individual Community Development, Water and Transportation sector plans, with inputs from ES and other business line personnel.

  • The successful candidate will also be expected to have specific expertise in and personally lead the Water and Transportation components of the overall Infrastructure Sector.

  • Identify and win large contracts, projects, programs and opportunities while leveraging global Stantec relationships for ES with existing clients.

  • Drive revenue growth opportunities for the entire range of Stantec services and champion an integrated services approach.

  • Partner with appropriate Sector Leaders and Regional Business Leaders (RBLs); assist RBLs in the Budget, Annual Review, and Bonus processes.

  • Build, grow, and develop a team of high performers based in each relevant target geography for the Sector; recruit & retain specialist staff, project managers and account managers within the practice.

  • This role has the potential to lead other infrastructure sector team members.

  • Develop in-house Sector expertise, best practices, and research & development initiatives.

  • Personally, pursue and lead transformational projects within the sector.

  • Develop strategic partnerships to assist in growing the assigned market.

  • Responsible for quality and innovation including compliance within the sector with the ISO-certified Integrated Management System and PM Framework.

  • Work directly with the RBLs, regional leaders (RLs), discipline leaders (DLs), and business center leaders to meet net revenue, gross margin, and operating income targets in the groups.

  • Time allocation to include a blend of direct time on projects (approx. 40%) and client- and proposal-specific marketing and business development (50%).

  • Other duties as assigned.

Strategic Thinking

  • Identify trends and develop a long-term view of the Infrastructure Sector market and key client account base. Work to position the company in key portions of the sector market and accounts to provide for sustainable growth.

  • Assist in targeting large prime contracts for strategic growth.

  • Identify new service areas and work collaboratively with others in the company to leverage opportunities for Stantec’s entire range of services.

  • Anticipate medium- and long-term client needs and industry dynamics.

  • Innovate and enhance our capabilities, geographic footprint, and integrated approach

  • Decisions are made using critical thinking, good business sense, and organizational values to make collaborative decisions involving varying levels of risk and ambiguity.


  • Direct marketing and business development activities involving environmental services within the Canadian Infrastructure Sector.

  • Work closely with client account managers, RBLs, and technical service leadership to deliver safe, profitable, and sustainable projects and services for our clients.

  • Develop a team of high performers through coaching and mentoring of business center staff and account managers in growing business with federal, provincial, municipal, and local clients, community development, transportation, and water facilities.

  • Support the development of multi-disciplinary project execution teams.

Key Performance Indicators

  • KPIs are in the process of being refined for all sector leaders and may include but is not limited to the following:

  • Achieve annual HSE targets specific to a sector leader.

  • Achieve budgeted net revenue in ES Infrastructure sector.

  • Ability to recruit and retain sector-specific experts.

  • Win/loss ratio on specific transformational pursuits within the sector.

  • Leading by example to meet chargeability targets and be engaged execution/leadership of key projects.

  • Ability to influence and collaborate across the organization based on feedback from internal colleagues.

Education and Experience

The successful candidate will have a proven track record as a key contributor to a leadership team, including the following qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in environmental science or engineering is required. We prefer that candidates also have a graduate degree in a technical, business, or marketing field, but a graduate degree is not required.

Minimum of 15 years of experience, which must include relevant consulting experience in the Canadian Infrastructure Sector with specific focus on community development, water, and/or transportation.

Environmental regulatory or remediation experience for community development or transportation clients is preferred.
