Your Opportunity

The Legal Counsel, Major Projects will join a team of lawyers specializing in design-build and P3 projects and will be part of the larger Risk Management group. The Legal Counsel will work directly with Project teams to provide accurate and timely advice and support to the Project teams with a view to protecting Stantec’s interests and facilitating successful delivery of Projects. It is envisioned that the Legal Counsel will be directly involved with 3-4 Projects at any one time. The Projects range from buildings to infrastructure and energy projects and are located in North America and internationally. This is a great opportunity for lawyers interested in venturing into business and commercial advisory roles.

Your Responsibilities

  • Build and strengthen relationships with Project teams by cultivating a deep understanding of Stantec’s services and Projects and providing proactive, solution-oriented advice throughout the Project lifecycle, from bid development through to Project completion;

  • Participate in meetings with executive and C-Suite leadership to communicate Project risks and mitigation strategies, and overall Project reporting;

  • Lead the review, drafting and negotiation of contracts and other legal documentation as well as support the Project team in preparing fee, scope and schedule documents;

  • Review RFQs and RFPs to support and guide development of bids across a variety of sectors;

  • Support the Project team in documenting material Project events and schedule impacts and drafting notices and other Project correspondence;

  • Assist Project team with identification, documentation and quantification of changes to Stantec’s scope of services;

  • Provide presentations and workshops to the Project team with respect to contract administration including, corporate policies, procedures and guidelines, change and delay management;

  • Contribute to the preparation, and monitor Project team compliance with, the Project-specific Design Quality Management Plan;

  • Manage and lead analysis, substantiation and submission of Stantec claims as well as manage and lead analysis and defense of claims made against Stantec, including coordinating with Project teams and experts to investigate merits of claims against Stantec and working directly with insurers, adjusters and external counsel;

  • Liaise with Insurance and Finance departments

Your Qualifications

  • Proactive, can-do and collaborative attitude is a must;

  • Ability to seamlessly transition from leadership/advisory role to supporting role to meet Project needs and demands;

  • Member in good standing of a provincial bar;

  • Proven ability to work as part of a team, and to be able to work independently;

  • Strong drafting skills;

  • Highly developed business sense;

  • Excellent communicator with a practical approach;

  • Relevant P3 experience is an asset;

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities;

Your Education and Experience

  • A law degree plus a minimum of two years’ experience.

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario or Law Society of British Columbia
