Stantec Senior Hydro Mechanical Engineer in Sacramento, California

Your Opportunity

We are currently looking to add a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support our Water Power and Dams group.

In this position, the candidate will work with other senior level engineers, principal engineers and project managers on multi-disciplinary projects. The projects will include new development, modernization and rehabilitation of hydro mechanical equipment for hydropower and other water resource projects. Systems will include water, oil, air and other balance of plant mechanical systems. Additionally, the hydroelectric equipment pressure regulating system inclusive of hydraulic pressure unit, pressure tank, piping and mechanical or digital governor may also be considered.

Your Duties

The primary responsibilities for this role will include:

  • Working with a multi-discipline group of engineers and technicians providing technical services to public and private sector clients including design work, field work and project management activities.

  • Manage technical aspects of projects and interact with clients on existing and potential projects and support marketing.

  • Independently providing mechanical engineering for hydro projects for domestic and international, private and public sector clients (including Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, Bureau of Reclamation, PG&E etc.)

  • Provide project and budget planning and project time management for self and others in project team.

  • Independently responsible for:

  • Planning studies, detailed analyses and designs, and construction services related to hydro-mechanical equipment associated with hydroelectric power plants for various domestic and international projects.

  • Hydraulic turbine selections, cost estimating, equipment layout and coordination with other engineering disciplines during preliminary feasibility studies and design.

  • Procurement, analysis and design of hydro-mechanical systems including hydraulic turbines, speed governing systems, turbine shut-off valves, mechanical balance of plant equipment, synchronous generators, all types of gates and operators, trashracks, bulkheads, overhead cranes and other related systems.

  • Report and specification writing.

  • Preparation of construction plans and specifications.

  • Evaluation of turbine-generator equipment and gate equipment bids and participation in contract negotiations.

  • Providing mechanical engineering for development of new hydroelectric projects and rehabilitation of existing hydroelectric facilities including: gates and hoisting systems for water control structures such as dams, spillways, intakes and outlets, pipelines, penstocks; hydraulic turbines; speed governing systems.

  • Perform condition assessment of power plant mechanical equipment, including turbines and generators (crawl thru inspection) at the customer site.

  • Perform risk assessment, ranking and life cycle costing of mechanical equipment replacement, repair and rehabilitation

  • Domestic or international travel may be required.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Bachelors in Mechanical engineering, Masters preferred

  • PE required or ability to obtain within 2 years of employment.

  • 10 + years’ of progressive experience in hydro-mechanical equipment.

  • Experience in powerhouse equipment (design/ testing/ commissioning) including turbines, governing systems, gates and hoists, trash racks, bulkheads, overhead cranes etc.

  • Hydro engineering experience for hydroelectric power plants and water control structures specifically dams, spillways, intakes and outlets.

  • Hydro rehabilitation experience including upgrade planning and design for existing hydro.

  • Experience in providing mechanical support for hydroelectric planning / development of planning reports.

  • Experience in project reports, budget and schedule management and client interaction such as client presentations, scoping and marketing.

  • Experience with preparation of proposals.

  • Demonstrated strength in written and verbal communication.

  • Knowledge of power plant Health and Safety requirements and PPE.

  • Knowledge of power plant equipment costs, manufacturing lead time and sourcing.

  • Experience with risk assessment, ranking of alternative, life cycles cost of mechanical equipment.
