Tribal Monitors are an integral part of the field team. Stantec recognizes the interests of Indigenous groups in all aspects of Project development and environmental protection. Although not required, our clients want to show their vested interest and in some cases are willing to cover Tribal monitors to work with crews during field investigations within their respective ancestral territories. Monitors will need to report to the Crew Chief and will receive safety equipment prior to starting the job.
Tribal Monitors will have knowledge of their respective community’s interests and demonstrate a high level of commitment to support all mitigation measures applicable to the Project. Monitors are also encouraged to show an interest in expanding their understanding and experience relating to environmental work.
Your Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Tribal Monitors include, but are not limited to, the following:
Monitoring activities for archaeological testing;
Reporting to and communicating with the Crew Chief;
Coordinating schedules and activities with the Crew Chief;
Identifying concerns or questions about observations to the Crew Chief;
Observing and assisting in the implementation of project activities, as appropriate; and
Completing a daily monitoring form to document the day’s work and any findings.
Tribal Monitors will be accompanied on the project worksite by a designated Crew Chief responsible for leading discussions on site testing, testing activities and for supporting monitor activities at these locations.
At the start of each workday, Tribal Monitors will report to the daily inspector meeting to hear a summary of the previous and upcoming day’s activities and to discuss any, safety and environment concerns. Tribal Monitors must abide by all safety requirements and wear personal protective equipment at all times while on site. The Tribal Monitor should be prepared for all weather conditions, supply their own food and water for the day (a per diem-based cost for expenditures will be added to the hourly rate), and be comfortable working outside all day.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
The Tribal Monitor will possess the following:
If driving: MUST possess a valid driver’s license with no restrictions.
Able to lift 20 pounds and endure long days of physically and mentally challenging field work while maintaining a positive, solutions-focused attitude.
Willingness to take direction from Crew Chief and demonstrate a strong team approach that values learning and communications to achieve successful outcomes
Willingness to be away from home working 10-hour days (including weekends) under a variety of outdoor conditions for up to 12 days at a time or longer and reside in hotel accommodation
Meet basic fit for work requirements including a drug and alcohol screening prior to coming to the site.
Must be fit to work in field construction environment
