The role of a Transportation Engineering Intern is to work as a team member on small and large projects under the guidance of a Senior Engineer. The Transportation Engineering Intern will work under direct supervision of a Senior Engineer to develop skills in evaluating, selecting, specifying, and engineering systems or products for a project.
As a Transportation Engineering Intern in our Ottawa Transportation Group, you will be involved in the planning and design of transportation projects for public sector clients, including City of Ottawa, MTO and airport authorities. You will be responsible for assisting senior project managers in the following areas:
Your Key Responsibilities
Developing alignments, profiles, typical cross-sections, and grading cross-sections.
Roadside safety design and roadway drainage design.
Quantity calculations and cost estimating.
Preparing contract documents, reports, and proposals.
Preparing and presenting information to the public.
Project scheduling and coordinating multi-discipline teams.
Utilizing relevant software programs to prepare exhibits and complex working drawings.
Performing other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Working knowledge of relevant roadway and highway design guides, such as the TAC Geometric Design Guide, and the MTO Design Supplement for TAC Geometric Design Guide and Roadside Design Manual.
Familiarity with highway and roadway design related software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, IRoads and MicroStation
Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Similar summer work-term or co-op experience would be considered as a definite asset for this position.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related field & EIT; Minimum of 2-3 years of experience. Must be registered with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) as an Engineering Intern.
Position will primarily work in an office setting; may require some field work.
