Based in Boston, Charlotte, and Denver, our Urban Places team connects the people and resources that take projects from concept to reality. As Planning and Urban Design Director for the US, you’ll help lead projects focused on urban design; integration of architecture; street design; public space design; sustainability-focused urban planning; and integrated mobility planning. The ideal candidate can thrive in a rapidly changing environment, embraces innovation, and stays alert for creative solutions to support our growing team. You’ll report to the overall Urban Places Planning and Urban Design leader, and will collaborate with other members of the practice leadership across the US and Canada.
Your Key Responsibilities
Lead urban design and urban planning for projects within the Boston area for our Urban Places team.
Increase the visibility of urban planning and urban design within the Boston and Northeastern U.S. markets and beyond.
Work with other Stantec disciplines—including architecture, transportation, power and energy, landscape architecture, and civil engineering—to deliver high-quality design projects in the Northeast and nationally.
Collaborate with urban planners, architects, mobility planners, and landscape architects to develop and project the group’s thought leadership on all things urban, both in the U.S. and as part of Stantec’s global Urban Places initiative.
Manage the day-to-day operations of the design team and provide leadership/mentorship for team members, including training and development, estimating personnel needs, assigning work, meeting completion dates, and interpreting and ensuring consistent application of Stantec standards.
Make decisions and recommendations on employment issues, such as staff selection, hiring, pay, promotion, transfer, demotion, or termination.
Lead all aspects of the project-development cycle, including client engagement, preparation of fee proposals, and project delivery.
Engage regularly with key clients to discuss current projects and evaluate our performance. Identify new business opportunities, either with current clients or through referrals, with an emphasis on business development and strategic pursuits.
Help create master plans and consult on planning policy to support sustainable communities and urban places.
Participate in the larger Urban Places leadership team to coordinate virtual sharing of Urban Places staff resources across North America.
Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Technical expertise in all relevant areas of design and understanding of various design methods.
Demonstrated effectiveness in building and maintaining client relationships. Proven ability to translate those relationships into winning opportunities
Ability to communicate effectively, develop strong internal relationships, and foster a culture of collaboration.
Thorough understanding of codes, legal, and design requirements, with significant local jurisdictional experience and established contacts.
Mastery of project management.
Proficiency in drafting/design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat.Education and Experience
The minimum education requirement is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in architecture, planning, urban design, landscape architecture, or a related field. Prefer APA, AIA, or PLA certification. Minimum of 10 years of experience.
You will work in a typical office setting, much of the time with computers. Some travel will be required for such tasks as delivering and presenting plans or documents to reviewing agencies or clients; attending client or public meetings; attending conferences to make presentations or participate in forums; and participating in internal meetings of key Urban Places leadership focused on strategy and business development. May occasionally visit study areas, construction sites, and/or be exposed to outside elements and inclement weather conditions.
