This position can be filled in our North Jersey (Morristown, NJ) or South Jersey (Mount Laurel, NJ) traffic office locations.
The role of a Traffic Engineer is to work independently on smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of transportation sector leadership, which includes the leaders of our traffic engineering group and highway design group. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of transportation studies and projects including highway, corridor, and intersection improvements from conceptual through final design. Opportunities for advancement include project management, leadership and/or project management courses, business development, and delegation of responsibilities to our junior traffic staff.
Your Key Responsibilities
Develop solutions to improve mobility for all users, integrating Complete Streets best practices.
Work as part of a team, and also independently, in evaluating and applying traffic engineering principles.
Utilize various design software/tools (Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, AimSun, Sidra, etc.) for traffic analysis for a variety of conditions and needs at various transportation facilities. Such traffic models will be customized based upon observed field conditions and proposed traffic conditions.
Lead the development of signal design plans, signing/striping plans, specifications, and estimates based upon NJDOT (or other client), MUTCD, and AASHTO standards.
Interact directly with state and local government clients and review agencies at project meetings and ensure that all client project designs satisfy engineering standards and exceed client expectations.
Build and maintain relationships with key traffic engineering clients and review agencies both through project involvement and professional organization involvement, such as Institute of Transportation Engineers events.
Work with multi-disciplinary teams on tasks such as road safety audits, transit station facility design, surface/garage parking lot design, transportation management plans, intersection design, signal design, roadway signing and pavement marking plans, construction staging plans, and traffic and signal operation analysis.
Prepare written technical reports to document the results of engineering/planning studies and surveys, including Traffic Impact Studies and manuals containing guidelines and standards.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Comprehensive understanding of all phases of project development and contract document production.
Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
Possesses excellent time-management skills.
Thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite.
Proficient in relevant design software, which may include AutoCAD, MicroStation, GuideSIGN, and AutoTURN.
Experience with traffic modeling/analysis software, with proficiency in Synchro and VISSIM.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related field.
Licensed as a Professional Engineer.
PTOE certification a plus.
Minimum of 4-10 years of experience.
