Your Opportunity

The role of Geotechnical Engineer is to work independently on projects and proposals and as a Team Leader under the guidance of our Business Centre Leadership. He or she will perform a variety of tasks which may include preparing proposals, reports, calculations, and field work. The projects that may be assigned may be broad, varied, and diverse in scope. The successful candidate will be expected to analyze proposed projects to ensure resource efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Stantec is seeking an Intermediate to Senior Geotechnical Engineer and Team Leader to join our team in the Moncton, NB office.

Your Key Responsibilities


  • Working on a variety of small to large projects spanning from transportation, residential, commercial, and industrial developments;

  • Assisting senior engineers with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule;

  • Conduct field work and testing which may include borehole drilling, test pit supervision, construction site review, rock anchor testing, slope stability assessments (rock and soil), rock fall hazard assessment, and installation of instrumentation;

  • Client and contractor management;

  • Engineering and design of geological and/or geotechnical systems including, foundation design, slope stability, rockfall hazard analysis, soil improvement, and others;

  • Preparation and coordination of the project specifications and construction documents;

  • Preparation and review of proposals and geotechnical reports; andOther general field and office related duties as required.

Team Leader:

At Stantec, Team Leaders are the front-line managers in operational control, responsible for the overall team financial results (top line and bottom line), and to provide opportunities for team members to achieve the career and business objectives documented in their Career Development Performance Review (CDPR) . Some of the responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate staff utilization, availability and resourcing within the team, requesting assistance from Leadership as appropriate;

  • Lead and coordinate appropriate level of support for Business Development opportunities in the local market;

  • Work with team to address personnel or project issues as they arise;

  • Provide leadership to direct reports and support the overall team, including recruiting new hires;

  • Encourage junior and intermediate staff to seek out coaching and mentoring from Senior Practitioners within and outside the team;

  • Spearhead team building initiatives and encourage staff through positive reinforcement;

  • Work effectively with other Senior Practitioners to deliver effective and solutions to our clients;

  • Assist the Managing Leader to achieve key financial targets (e.g., team utilization, WIP/AR management);

  • Assist the Sector Leader to meet or exceed budgeted net revenue targets for the Business Centre;

  • Assist the Discipline Leader with staff integration between disciplines and regions;

  • Assist the Discipline Leader with training initiatives and the implementation of and compliance with HSE policy; and

  • Assist leadership in recognizing employee achievements and milestones.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • A self-starter who is innovative and enjoy working in a team environment;

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought;

  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment; and;

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Education and Experience

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Geological /Geotechnical Engineering from a recognized university; a post graduate degree would be an asset. Minimum of 6 years of experience.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
