Your Opportunity

An immediate opening exists in our Markham Transportation group for Intermediate Track Designer. Our intent is to grow this practice area significantly across the company, and this is an opportunity to assist in developing our rapidly growing business.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Take a proactive hands-on role in track design projects.

  • Management of the track design process through the conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases.

  • Development of ballasted and non-ballasted track structures, track alignment, profile, and associated grading using Civil 3D.

  • Assessment of rail vehicle/infrastructure clearances.

  • Peer review of the track design and associated reports prior to submission.

  • Liaison with other disciplines to ensure all work is completed to a high standard and with a consistent approach.

  • Preparation of the design briefs, technical reports, design analysis and calculations.

  • Calculation of quantities, preparation of cost estimates, project specifications and construction tender documents.

  • Provide technical direction to junior designers and oversee work undertaken by junior staff.

  • Working with Project Managers on developing design schedule and budgets.

  • Participation in the preparation of proposals and other strategic initiatives.

  • Interaction with clients and transportation agencies on a regular basis.

  • Conducting the periodic trackwork inspection.

  • Comply with Stantec Quality Management, Safety and Environmental policies.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credenials

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Substantial Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D

  • Knowledge of drafting standards with ability to produce clean and clear design drawings.

  • An understanding and commitment to CAD standards and procedures

  • Ability to work in fast paced environment, multitask effectively, meet the project deadlines and budget targets, while maintaining efficiency and quality of work.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Must be able to work well in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good technical understanding of Class 1 Railway design for Mainline, yards, industrial tracks, intermodal and transload facilities, special trackwork, ballasted and non-ballasted track and associated grading and drainage will be considered an asset.

  • Experience in commuter and light rail transit projects will be considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices and construction specifications will be considered an asset.

  • Ability to supervise more junior staff and coordinate production workload.

  • Ability to work independently on projects and communicate potential issues with respect to scheduling, budget or progress; and identify the change orders.

  • Experience in track construction supervision and trackwork inspection will be considered an asset.

  • Preferred software experience – MicroStation, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

  • Strong knowledge of AREMA, Class 1 Railroad and Light Rail Transit design and construction requirements will be considered an asset.

  • Degree/Diploma in Civil Engineering Design program from an accredited University/College or equivalent

Education and Experience

Preferably 5 years’ experience in railway track engineering and complex, multi-discipline rail transit projects
