Stantec Commercial Director, Canada Buildings and Infrastructure in Markham, Ontario

Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Commercial Director, experienced design and construction professional, to join its Commercial Management Group in support of major projects throughout the company and based in Canada. This is an opportunity to work on Stantec’s largest and most complex buildings and infrastructure projects.

The Commercial Director provides corporate-level support of alternative project delivery (APD) projects, including design-build (DB), Engineer Procure Construct (EPC), and public-private partnership (PPP/P3) projects. The Commercial Management Group primarily supports the Stantec design consulting business, focusing on coordination of APD partner relationships, project contract formation, and dispute resolution. Projects typically range from $50 million to over $1 billion.

Preferred location is Vancouver, British Columbia. This position can be located anywhere in Canada where we have major Stantec offices, such as Edmonton, AB; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.

Your Duties

  • Assist engineering and architecture business units with identification and selection of APD project opportunities and business partners

  • Draft and negotiate all aspects of APD design and engineering contracts, including conditions, scope, pricing, and schedule provisions

  • Establish and maintain standardized contracts with preferred APD partners

  • Apply experience to identify and prioritize project risks and develop risk mitigation practices for successful project execution

  • Provide commercial advice to project teams and senior management throughout project lifecycle

  • Coordinate corporate legal and financial services

  • Identify and develop strategies to strengthen presence in the APD market

  • Participate in contract and dispute negotiations and lead negotiations, as required

  • Participate in project risk and governance reviews

  • Represent Stantec at industry associations

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or degree in Law with substantial AEC industry experience.

  • 8+ years commercial or project management experience in AEC industry

  • Experience drafting and negotiating professional service contracts

  • Ability to understand and advise on complex APD deal structures and contract provisions

  • Understanding of customary design and construction contract documents

  • AEC industry design-build experience

  • Ability to convey presence and confidence in negotiations with sophisticated contracting partners

  • Demonstrated interest in AEC industry

  • Willingness to travel in US and Canada approximately 10% – 20%. Some global travel may be required
