Stantec is seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individual with a keen interest and experience in ecosystem restoration. Your role as Restoration Ecologist will be to lead development and delivery of ecological planning and ecosystem restoration projects in the Chicago region. In this role, you will support business development opportunities, provide project management for ecological consulting and ecosystem restoration contracting projects, assist with project implementation, and support staff training and development.
This is a full-time position within our Midwest Environmental Services team, based in Chicago.
Your Key Responsibilities
Business Development responsibilities include:
Identifying and managing ecological consulting and ecosystem restoration pursuits.
Actively participate in industry events, such as trade organizations, conferences, and various working groups.
Identifying grant opportunities across various business lines and grant writing.
Assisting marketing staff with development of marketing support materials.
Developing project proposals.
Project Management responsibilities include:
Managing multiple tasks and projects according to project management best practices.
Identify appropriate resources and skill sets to achieve project/task order objectives.
Successfully complete work as part of a multi-disciplined team that may include a broad range of technical disciplines such as civil/water resources engineers, landscape architects, ecologist/biologists, planners, GIS specialists and others.
Frequently interact and interface with clients, agencies, and other project stakeholders.
Ecological planning and ecosystem restoration responsibilities include:
Conducting ecological evaluation field work to support development of site planning documents and other technical reports.
Assisting in tracking current and emerging technical initiatives with a focus on creativity and innovation.
Supervision, training, technical direction and mentoring of more junior staff.
Conducting peer reviews of routine and moderately complex work products and conduct field quality reviews.
Participating in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all office and field work.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Proficient in and consistently demonstrates and promotes policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (if applicable).
Strong knowledge of the ecology and natural communities of the upper Midwest.
Business development and networking experience.
Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships.
Advanced skills in technical and grant writing.
Experience managing multiple projects and tasks concurrently.
Experience planning and implementing ecosystem restoration projects, including use of tools and methods to manage prairies, wetlands, woodlands, and streams.
Disciplined approach to project execution and technical excellence.
Ability to provide written and verbal direction on project delivery.
Shows leadership in striving to continuously improve technical performance.
Strong work ethic, high ethical standards, and a desire for team success

Willingness and ability to travel.
Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.
At least four years of experience successfully executing technical aspects of medium to complex projects.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field.
Minimum 7-8 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education (e.g., advanced degree) and experience.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
