Stantec has an immediate need for a Project Engineer (Water Resources) in our Environmental Services group. Your Duties

The ideal candidate for our team of water resources experts would be one who thrives on finding solutions to complex problems and has a balance of experience and/or capabilities that include: (1) stormwater management design, (2) stream restoration design, and (3) dam rehabilitation design. However, any combination of this experience is still desirable, as further detailed below.


  • Perform the design and evaluation of stormwater facilities and strategies.

  • Perform credit analysis of BMPs for TMDL Credit using regulatory guidance.

  • Assist in the development of TMDL Action Plans and stormwater master planning.

  • Support stormwater master planning at a basin or community scale.

  • Assist with inspection of BMPs, municipal facilities, and outfalls.

  • Model watershed characteristics using geospatial tools.

  • Conduct studies and assessments on dams and lakes, including Dam Break Inundation Zone (DBIZ) modeling, dam safety support, and dam rehabilitation design.

  • Perform dam inspections.

  • Lead design for dam and spillway retrofits.

  • Support other studies and assessments on dams and lakes, including Dam Break Inundation Zone (DBIZ) modeling, and dam safety permitting.

  • Support stream restoration hydraulic modeling, stability calculations, and engineering design.

  • Support field assessments for water quality studies, watershed walkovers, stream assessments, and other projects.

  • Perform floodplain evaluations, including modeling and agency support.

  • Conduct peer and quality reviews on all applicable projects.

  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by management.

Your Capabilities and Credentials


  • Bachelor of Science (minimum) in Civil, Water Resources, Environmental Engineering or other closely related degree required. Masters preferred.

  • Professional Licensure (P.E.) required.


  • Minimum of 5 years prior experience in a similar role required.


  • Must have a high attention to detail.

  • Skill in hydrology and hydraulics software (e.g. HEC-RAS, SWMM, or Pond Pack) and Microsoft Office software.

  • Experience with dam safety, dam break inundation zone (DBIZ) modeling, and dam rehabilitation design preferred.

  • Skill in final design and construction plan preparation for stormwater BMP and/or stream restoration projects.

  • Knowledge of LID practices and design.

  • Skill in preparation of technical specifications and bid documents.

  • Skill in technical writing and verbal communication.

  • Ability to travel within Virginia on a daily basis on short notice.

  • Ability to present to small groups on wide range of projects.

  • Ability to walk 2-4 miles per day in rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to work in a highly automated design office environment.

  • Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner, both in writing and in person, with clients, employees and visitors.

  • Ability to coordinate and communicate with clients and engineers.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Must have a good driving record and valid driver’s license. Prior to employment with Stantec, the candidate will be required to successfully pass drug/alcohol screening.
