Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Calgary office is currently seeking an Environmental Construction Support Services Coordinator to work with our Assessment, Permitting and Compliance Team. Working with Project Managers and Project Directors, the Environmental Construction Support Services Coordinator (ECSSC) will provide support to the Stantec project delivery team and field crews (consultant side). On the client side, the ECSSC will provide liaison and support to the Environmental Inspection (EI) team and to the Construction (Spread) Project Managers (client side) in order to help them execute environmental programs and processes in support of construction. Using a risk-balance approach the ECSSC will exercise professional judgement to offer guidance and recommendations to the consultant side team to help facilitate successful completion of project deliverables.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Guidance

    • Provide guidance and clarity to the Stantec delivery team and client EI team on the environmental requirements / mitigations to their work areas as required.
    • Contribute to the regulatory reporting and permit acquisition / execution by acting as a regulatory advisor on construction permitting tasks including watercourse crossings, road use agreements and permitting, water use permits, wildlife handling permits etc.
    • Provide timely updates the Stantec delivery team (consultant side and client side) on any environmental issues that arise in the field during construction to provide consistency and alignment in the management of environmental issues.
    • Provide updates to the Stantec delivery team and to EIs regarding required changes to environmental practices or mitigations as a result of change requests
    • Respond to requests for clarifications or information.
    • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (planning, field crews, safety etc) on environmental issues in the field or with permits.
    • Plan, coordinate and support the mobilization and coordination of Stantec field crews in their respective areas of operation as needed.
    • Work with the Stantec delivery team to build and execute resource plans to meet project needs
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives internally and with the client
    • Work with subconsultants and Stantec employees in the execution of designed plans and manage activities so they are done to the required standard by the environmental field crews at the construction site
    • Provide liaison and maintain active relations with the EIs and the client Environmental Advisor
    • In conjunction with the EI, field coordinator and crew leadership, provide guidance and instructions to field crews, in situ, on required tasks and compliance
    • Provide guidance and advice on scope gaps and provide change orders to manage scope
    • Coordinate and manage communication of results of field work to internal and external stakeholders as per the defined communications plan.
    • Work with the Stantec delivery team and provide recommendations for decisions on the overall technical execution of the Stantec deliverables / execution of the project
    • Liaison with client, sub-contractors and suppliers for scheduling, coordination and pricing work packages or scope changes.
    • Assist in preparation and monitoring of the project schedule working with Project Managers and Discipline Leads for further input
    • Review and maintain construction budgetary compliance to the environmental field work and advise Project Director and Project Managers of variances or issues as they arise.
    • Provide guidance, assistance, training, coaching and direction to delivery staff where appropriate to enable the successful completion of the project scope of work and support development of the group
  • Safety

    • Confirm all HSSE policies are practices are being carried out in a consistent manner by the Stantec delivery teams, through review and monitoring of practice in the field via site audits.
    • Coordinate and assist in developing, monitoring and enforcing quality control program for assigned project
    • Working through Safety Team and Field Coordinator confirm company safety policies are met by all workers, including Job Hazard Assessment, Risk Assessment, Tool Box meetings and communication of Safety Memos and that all incidents are reported (near misses, property damage, injuries, environmental, etc.).
    • Visit project sites to assess quality and safety performance and adherence to Stantec and Project / Client policies and procedures of Stantec environmental personnel otherwise conducted by an appointed Stantec Safety person.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • The ideal candidate has the ability to work with initiative, professionalism and confidentiality, and is able to multi-task and adapt to change in a very dynamic environment

  • Demonstrated team player with the ability to work independently and take initiative.

  • Strong understanding of federal and western Canadian provincial regulations and permitting requirements

  • Ability and desire to coaching and mentor junior staff

  • Demonstrated experience in client management and business growth

  • Excellent writing and communication skills

  • Ability to use Excel proficiently and creatively to problem-solve and communicate

  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite

Education and Experience

  • M. Sc. or B. Sc. in Environmental Sciences, or equivalent field of study;

  • A minimum of 10 years experience working on projects in construction phase and working with Environmental Inspectors.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
