Stantec is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical/Civil (Tailings) Engineer with expertise in mine waste and tailings related projects. This position offers the opportunity to work on mining projects in a multi-discipline project team environment across our Canadian and international offices. Supporting our team from any of our offices in Eastern Canada (Markham, Ottawa, Montreal, Fredericton, Saint John, Dartmouth, or St. John’s), the successful candidate will have experience that specializes in the planning, design, and construction of mine tailings storage facilities.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Technical

  • Provide technical guidance to a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Work with and lead technical teams, perform and deliver technical work, make technical presentations, plan technical portions of projects, develop technical portions of proposals, and provide technical review of work products.

  • Lead by example with active support of internal policies and practices, including risk management, project management, and quality management.

  • Mentor and train junior staff to grow their technical capabilities.

  • Promote collaboration and teamwork across business lines and geographies.

  • Project Execution

  • Implementation of health and safety, security protocols and supporting Stantec’s strong safety culture

  • Project financial management and scheduling.

  • Preparation of concise reports, workplans and proposals using Stantec templates and quality standards.

  • Close collaboration with Stantec service lines to create integrated project solutions for clients.

  • Budget preparation, financial tracking and reporting and invoice review.

  • Business Development and Marketing

  • Meeting and communication with clients and business development

  • Work across the multiple business lines within Stantec to support development of new business opportunities for existing and prospective clients.

  • Monitoring the business environment to determine which clients best meet Stantec’s skill set and provide the appropriate opportunities to meet the financial targets of the region and organization.

  • In collaboration with others, assist with the development of strategic plans to target new clients as well as build on existing relationships. Lead the effort in the development of new client relationships in the region and assist outside the Eastern Canada region through collaboration across geography and business lines.

  • Promoting business collaboration initiatives, working with other Business Lines to ensure a “We are better together” approach is taken with regards to client management and targeted opportunities and projects.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Good understanding of the Canadian mining industry, regulatory framework and key players in the industry.

  • Proven project/task experience with performing geotechnical investigations, engineering, design, construction management, and project management of mine tailings storage facilities.

  • Demonstrated successful experience in client service management, including the ability to interface and build relationships with clients.

  • Demonstrated successful experience in leadership of technical team, projects, and change management.

  • Good understanding of project financial management

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency in English and French would be an asset.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum seven (7) years of relevant experience in mine waste and tailings storage facility related projects.

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in geotechnical/mining sector-related engineering discipline or sciences.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in supervision of project personnel.

  • Ability to have Professional Designation (i.e. P.Eng.) in multiple provinces and territories will be required.
