Stantec's Transportation group has an immediate need for a Senior Railway Design Task Lead to join their team in Chicago, IL office.

Your Key Responsibilities

The candidate will serve as part of the Rail/Transit Group within Transportation in the US Midwest and will report to the Freight Rail Leader – US Midwest The candidate will be recognized for his achievements in railway engineering and possess knowledge and communication skills to help manage, develop, and execute Rail/Transit projects. The candidate will also be considered an authority with respect to Rail/Transit projects and how to overcome the challenges related to winning, managing, and executing rail/transit projects. The candidate will be able to lead technical teams and produce technical documents to meet the needs of our Rail/Transit projects. While the candidate’s initial focus will be on opportunities in the US Midwest, broader responsibilities in other Regions will be considered based on demand and the candidate’s skills and abilities.


The candidate will strive to be 75% billable on Rail/Transit projects. This will include roles as a Railway Project Engineer, Designer, Design Manager, Project Manager, and Technical Advisor. These roles would be achieved primarily on projects in the US Midwest, with assistance and support provided on projects in other Regions.


Important responsibilities of this role involve assisting in the identification and winning of rail/transit projects across North America with an emphasis on projects in the US Midwest.

  • Development of project pursuit teams to be led by Stantec

  • Securing support positions on project teams to provide Rail/Transit services in other business centers and Regions

  • Proposal writing including managing the proposal preparation process and fee / schedule negotiations


  • Assisting with the development of the annual business plan for the Rail/Transit Group.

  • Identifying and developing existing and future technical resource candidates and career development opportunities for staff within the Rail/Transit group.

  • Encouraging cooperation, sharing of skills and workload between projects and the balance of Rail/Transit staff located in various Transportation business centers across the company.

  • General oversight and assistance to other project managers within the Rail/Transit Group with attention to schedule and budget issues.

  • Leading efforts to continue improvements in QA/QC processes and fostering a culture of being cost effective, efficient, and thorough in delivering projects.

  • Managing certain staff in the Rail/Transit group on a day to day basis and providing input into the employee Career Development and Performance Review and Compensation processes.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Preferably 10-15 years’ experience in railway track engineering

  • Must have a strong technical understanding of track alignment and track form design for standard trackwork, special trackwork, ballasted and non-ballasted track and associated grading and drainage

  • Experience with grading, drainage, and track alignment design for mainlines, sidings, industrial yards and spur tracks, intermodal and transload facilities, subway, commuter and light rail transit

  • Ability to complete conceptual plans, preliminary & detailed designs and cost estimating.

  • Track construction, staging and phasing experience an asset.

  • Local Transit and Heavy Rail project experience an asset.

  • Design Build Experience preferred.

  • Preferred Software experience - AutoCad, MicroStation, Civil 3D, In Roads, In Rail,MX Rail, Bentley Rail Track, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

  • Familiarity with AREMA, Class 1 Railroad and Light Rail Transit design and construction requirements.

  • Bachelor Degree from an accredited University engineering program, or equivalent

  • P.E.
