Your Duties

Working as part of the Global Talent Mobility team, the Tax Specialist will be responsible for the coordination of Assignment and Relocation tax and payroll issues for assignments and permanent relocations.

Close interaction and consulting with key stakeholders including HR, Finance, Payroll, business leaders and employees.

Practice Function

  • Advise on all assignments and relocations with respect to remuneration packages and taxation;

  • Provide general taxation advice to employees in relation to their mobility with Stantec;

  • Research tax laws and planning opportunities in new countries to structure tax effective assignment policies for Stantec’s global assignee population;

  • Prepare tax and payroll calculations;

  • Assist with year-end compensation process, analysis and projection of costs

  • Coordinate and assist local and foreign payrolls to ensure payroll data is accurate and complete;

  • Respond to payroll and tax related queries from employees or other key stakeholders;

  • Prepare project tax estimates for budget purposes;

Team Function

The Tax Specialist will be expected to:

  • Coordinate the provision of third party services relating to tax advice, tax return preparation for inpatriates/expatriates to assignees;

  • Work closely with Payroll and Accounting to maintain efficient systems and processes for administration of international assignments and salary packaging.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Minimum of 5 years in expatriate taxation and payroll;

  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with and advising on the taxation and remuneration structuring elements of Canadian and U.S. employees’ inpatriate and expatriate assignments including: - Business trips- Short term and long term international assignments, etc.

  • Understanding of other global tax systems and tax treaty application;

  • Cross border payroll experience;

  • Experience in local and foreign compensation and payroll issues;

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel;

  • Highly developed analytical skills and the ability to identify and deal with complex tax and payroll issues;

  • Good written and oral communication skills;

  • Good interpersonal skills;

  • Sound time management and prioritization skills;


  • Direct work experience with expatriate taxation and payroll is essential;

  • Accounting/Business degree preferred;

  • CPA/CA qualification an asset to this position;

  • Detailed knowledge of the Canadian and U.S. taxation systems, in particular the foreign income provisions is essential;

  • Working knowledge of other country’s tax systems an asset.

  • Previous experience with Engineering or Architecture services industry is desirable, although not essential.
