Your Opportunity

As a talented and ambitious Junior Field Technician in our Calgary, AB office, you will be assisting with planning, data collection & analysis, and technical reporting for a variety of field programs. You will also write reports, develop plans, and implement steps to move projects toward closure in the most cost-effective manner. This is a temporary position for the 2019 field season with the potential for extension, and work is expected to commence in April or May.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and document field data collection activities;

  • Assist in the completion of project level work (data management, report preparation);

  • Demonstrate ability to analyze field and technical data;

  • Draft technical reports;

  • Complete applicable company and client required health & safety training (including OSHA required training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures;

  • Follow established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete entry level and routine assignments

  • Support a variety of field programs across different scientific disciplines; which may include: Terrestrial, Aquatics, Site Investigation & Remediation, and Community & Aboriginal Affairs.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Able to work in a collaborative team environment and under deadlines in wilderness and outdoor settings;

  • Proven technical, communication, writing and organization skills;

  • Well-developed computer skills such as Excel, Microsoft Word;

  • Willingness to be away from home working 12-hour days (including nights, weekends, and holidays) under a variety of conditions for 14 days at a time or longer;

  • Able to endure long days of physically and mentally challenging field work while maintaining a positive, solutions-focused attitude;

  • Excellent navigational skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment and solve problems in the field;

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision but with the maturity to recognize when to seek advice;

  • Working knowledge of field sampling techniques and basic understanding of technical writing skills is an asset;

  • Exhibit a strong attention to detail;

  • Open minded and curious; show an ability to focus on possibilities, not preconceived solutions;

  • Build and maintain productive professional and personal networking relationships among colleagues; and

  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.

Education and Experience

Diploma or degree (in progress or completed) in biology or conservation, environmental biology/technology, renewable resources or ecology, Indigenous studies, anthropology, sociology, geography, archaeology and/or environmental sciences.

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Some time will be spent in a typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
