Our Calgary office is looking for 4 Co-op students to join our Community Development Team from May 2022 – December 2022. This is an eight-month term and shorter terms will not be considered.

As a Co-op Student, you will be working on Residential, Commercial, and Institutional infrastructure projects in our Field Services group, as part of our Community Development Business Centre. The primary responsibilities for this role are varied; however generally involve the field observation, recording and reporting for infrastructure installations, including deep utilities, surface improvements and erosion and sediment controls. All projects are within the City of Calgary and in surrounding communities. You will be working with project teams, to coordinate daily onsite construction activities and to ensure that infrastructure projects are completed as per design and design specifications. You must be very attentive to detail, well organized, have strong written and verbal communication skills and be able to prioritize multiple tasks as required. You must be committed to team work, as you may be working with multiple project teams on multiple infrastructure projects, in a very fast paced and dynamic work environment.

Your Key Responsibilities

As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Actively participate in the implementation of safety controls and promotion of safety in the work place.

  • Review and interpretation of approved engineering drawings.

  • Review and cross reference of construction grade sheets for issuance to contractors.

  • Observation of infrastructure installation for compliance with specification.

  • Daily on-site construction coordination, including liaising with contractors, City of Calgary/ other Municipalities, geotechnical consultants, and construction surveyors, as well as other specialized consultants.

  • Record daily activity on construction projects, including material used, daily labour and site progress.

  • Review, coordination and implementation of erosion and sediment controls on active work sites.

  • Preparation of cost analysis and recommendations of costs for senior staff consideration with respect to erosion and sediment control projects.

  • If time allows during the work term, you will be involved in the close out of construction contracts.

  • Meet, review and report to the project team on construction status, issues and concerns.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Candidates should possess the following Qualifications:

  • A driven individual with a strong dedication to continuous improvement and professional development.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Require fully licensed Class 5 drivers permit.

  • Candidates must be prepared to work extended hours and weekends.

Education and Experience

Undergraduate, registered in a Civil Engineering program in the 2nd or 3rd.

Field work may include exposure to the elements in unfavorable conditions.
