Your Duties

In this position, you are responsible for diverse functions that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Fill the role of Office Safety and Environment Coordinator (OSEC). An OSEC manages the local HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, and Environment) program including

  • A filing system containing forms, reports, documentation, and training records.

  • Office information boards and regular employee communications.

  • Identifying and tracking training requirements for project-specific field activities.

  • HSSE equipment, PPE, and supplies.

  • Monthly office workplace inspections, annual workplace violence program site survey and first aid assessment – coordinating any non-conformance responses.

  • Development and testing of emergency response plans, including relevant drills.

  • Ergonomic assessments.

  • HSSE orientations for new employees in the Burnaby, BC office.

  • Assist with preparation for various audits (COR, ISO, etc.).

  • Provide guidance and support to all employees in the Burnaby office (multiple disciplines), and Environmental Services/Geotechnical Engineering field staff throughout British Columbia regarding Stantec’s HSSE Policy and practices.

  • Act as a local resource for employee comments, concerns, and suggestions.

  • Regularly disseminate relevant information to employees on topics such as incident prevention, quality assurance, and compliance through various means including e-mail, face-to-face meetings, and team interactions.

  • Regularly interact with team members on project sites during field activities

  • Provide HSSE support to Project Managers (PMs):

  • Assist with project-level hazard identification and mitigation strategies.

  • Assist PMs to develop project specific safety plans and complete associated forms and documentation.

  • Support PMs in completing HSSE file reviews and field safety audits.

  • Work with the local management team to implement corporate HSSE policies and develop local HSSE plans.

  • Bring relevant items forward at team meetings, OSEC meetings, and/or joint health and safety committee meetings.

  • Support leadership in the implementation of a field-based HSSE committee.

  • Support supervisors, project managers, and local management through the incident reporting and investigation process. Where required, lead incident investigations and assist with implementation of corrective actions.

  • Working in conjunction with Corporate HSSE (Regional HSSE Advisor and Manager), Workers’ Compensation Claims Coordinator, and Human Resources, assist in the coordination of case management and modified work planning for injured employees.

Environmental Responsibilities:

In this position, you are responsible for diverse functions that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support office waste management program; hazardous and non-hazardous wastes.

  • Monitor compliance to ISO 14001 standards, including coordinating appropriate responses to non-conformances.

  • Support programs that will help us reduce our carbon and environmental footprints.

  • Work in conjunction with the Corporate Sustainability Team to promote sustainability within the local offices.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Qualifications :

  • 5+ years of related work experience in the health & safety field, including supporting resource-based field teams in remote environments.

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and standards in BC.

  • Strong communication and facilitation skills.

  • Superior investigation and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to operate independently in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment.

  • Able to work with diverse teams and people, including managers.

  • Experience in managing and auditing HSSE management systems is preferred.

  • Post-secondary education and/or training in Health and Safety would be an asset.

  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams of professional scientists in the consulting industry would be an asset.

  • Experience in safety programs for the construction industry would be an asset.

  • Experience with Environment Management systems (ISO-14001) would be an asset.

  • Very good computer skills – MS Office.
