Stantec Major Projects Counsel / Attorney, U.S. Buildings and Infrastructure in Broomfield, Colorado

Your Opportunity

Stantec seeks an exceptional Engineering and C onstruction Industry Attorney to provide both legal and business support of complex and high risk projects with emphasis on alternative project delivery (APD) projects, including design-build (DB), Engineer Procure Construct (EPC), and public-private partnership (PPP/P3) projects. Projects typically range from $50 million to over $1 billion. This is a unique opportunity for an attorney with significant AEC industry experience to focus on complex projects in an in-house environment.

This position can be located anywhere in the U.S. Preferred location is Broomfield, Colorado.

Your Duties

  • Provide expert-level business and legal advice to senior and project management on complex deal structuring, contracting, and dispute resolution

  • Work closely with project teams and Commercial Directors to draft and negotiate APD design and engineering contracts with hands-on involvement in detailed aspects of project formation beyond legal provisions

  • Establish and maintain corporate APD contracting standards and standardized contracts with preferred APD partners

  • Monitor APD legislative and legal developments

  • Provide training and mentoring to Commercial Project Managers and Corporate Counsel

  • Apply experience to identify and prioritize project risks and develop risk mitigation practices

  • Develop and coordinate complex dispute resolution strategies

  • Participate in mediations and dispute negotiations

  • Participate in project risk and governance reviews

  • Represent Stantec at industry associations

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensed attorney in at least one state

  • 10+ years legal experience; 5+ years of experience may be considered for highly qualified candidates

  • Specialized expertise in architecture, engineering, or construction law

  • Demonstrated interest in AEC industry

  • Sufficient experience to advise senior and executive management relative to design and construction industry practices

  • Ability to apply experience to identify major risks and potential disputes in design-build contracting

  • Willingness to travel in US and Canada approximately 10% – 20%. Some global travel may be required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Litigation and mediation experience with a recognized construction law firm

  • Thorough global AEC industry knowledge

  • Expertise in federal and local public contracting, insurance coverage, design-build, public private partnerships

  • Expertise in construction scheduling and claims preparation

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, architecture, or construction management

  • Project experience in a design or field construction environment

  • Active participation in a construction industry legal organization such as DBIA, ACEC, ABA, etc.

  • Final position title will be determined based on qualifications
